Special handles or grips are often used on spoons forks and pencils and pens to
make them easier for the child with Cerebral Palsy to hold on and use.
Communication Aids
When a child’s speech is very hard to understand, it is easier for them to use
a communication aid to talk with others. A communication aid might be a book or
a poster with pictures or an alphabet board that the child uses to spell out a
message. A communication aid can also be a computer that speaks for the child.
Children with Cerebral Palsy are often not able to use their hands well enough
to use a computer keyboard or a mouse. However, a speech and language therapist
can teach the child to learn to control a computer using a special light
pointer that attaches to a headband.
